Working on a Kiwi Orchard in NZ

Working on a Kiwi orchard in NZ

How we found this job?
There are jobs offered online at backpackerboard.nz. We contacted a guy who offered some jobs on his kiwi orchard. Eventually all positions were full when we called him and he gave us the contact number of Cathy.  Then we got the job after some phone calls. It's easy at the beginning of the season. But it will get more difficult later because everyone wants to work and there will be heaps of backpackers in the country.
Knastschwestern Crew
What do you need to start to working in NZ:
1. NZ bank account
2. IRD number
3. Contact number
4. valid work visa
5. Passport
6. probably transport (car/van)
7. enough food and water

First day of work: hard but nice! We met Cathy, our contact who organized our job. She is super friendly and explained us everything what we needed to know. The kiwi orchard is about 10 hectares big and we should do around 5 hectares. Our job was to do fruit thinning. That means to pick the bad and ugly fruits and drop them to the ground. Only healthy and nice kiwis can survive. This is one of the important maintenance for a kiwi orchard. The actual picking will start in March. Now he Kiwi fruits are still very small.

Kiwi Orchard 2
Kiwi Orchard 3
The work is pretty easy: the fruits are growing head high and there is always a bit of shade. We are only allowed to work when it's dry and sunny. If it's raining we would have off. Our neck and shoulders are sore after the first day. But it's ok. Our supervisor Bhalla is nice. He is from India (like all the other workers) and was looking after us during the day.
We get payed per hour. It's the minimum wage + 8% holiday fee.

Kiwi Thinning

More Kiwis
Second day of work:
Our neck and shoulders didn't feel too bad. We continued working at 07:30am-06:00pm with 30min break. It was alright and happily it was almost cloudy during the day. That means it wasn't too hot and less sunburn. At our first day of work we only worked 6h from noon because we had to wait until everything was dry from the rain. There were 2 more German backpackers joining our work at that day. We are planning to work here for 2-3 weeks and get along with the Indians very well. They are friendly and we share the bathroom and the kitchen (which is in their bedroom too). We sleep in our cars with a nice view to the ocean.

How we feel after 1 week of work:
We only last working for 8 days. We quit.
Why?
There were a few reasons but the reason for me was I couldn't be bothered to do this boring and primitive work anymore. Others had physicals problems.

Conclusion:
Good experience but nothing for me. There are a few backpackers working there for months. Big respect for them!! It's easy money but nothing I would do again.

My first week in NZ

My first week in NZ

First, I was pretty sad when I took off with the plane from the Goldcoast to Auckland. Ok I thought then: 'new country, new adventure'. Australia was epic and I fell in love with this country. I had 10 jobs, heaps of surfing and got to know lots of awesome people and places.

My Jobs in OZ 2016:
1 week: Tomatofarm (Shepparton VIC)
1 month: Blueberryfarm (Woolgoolga NSW)
1 month: Aupair (Beenleigh QLD)
5 month: Hostel Staff (Agnes Water QLD)
2 days: Gardener (Agnes Water QLD)
2 weeks: Kitchenhand (Agnes Water QLD)
4 month: Barista (Agnes Water QLD)
2 month: Surf Photographer (Agnes Water QLD)
4 month: Hostel Manager (Agnes Water QLD)
3 days: Travel Blogger (Airlie Beach QLD)

Note: I've done a few jobs at the same time.

The Fern

Auckland:
I arrived in Auckland and the first thing I noticed: it's so cold!. I directly put my jumper on. With all my luggage (20kg big backpack, 7kg small backpack, a skateboard and a surfboard), I was wandering around Auckland until I found my couchsurfing-host. Vagner and Lucas from Brazil hosted me. They are super friendly and gave me a shot tequila on my first night and took me to a bar with Sybil (USA), the other couchsurfer. I felt like I met 20 brazilians but I am also happy that I met Okko (Japan) and Lilly (NZ) and totally recommend to stay with the two boys at their flat. Then I already heard: 'Germans are everywhere'. I noticed this later on on my bus to Raglan.

Second night in Auckland: after spending time in the library, organizing a sim card, using the wifi and finishing some sketches, we had thanks giving. We made mashed potato with cheese and a turkey. Then we took the Uber to another flat and then booooom: 30 brazilians, me, Sybill, Okko and Lilly. It was awesome! Heaps of food, Brazilian and American music in the background and everybody was eating and talking. This was my first thanks giving.

Raglan:
After I messaged Lena, my friend from back home, that I am coming to Ragland to see her, she told me she is on a road trip with someone. 'But Marie will look after you!' So then I arrived at the library, was using the wifi and waiting for Marie. She is awesome! She picked me up and took me to the campsite. Falk and Nick were there as well. Second day: Surfing with Falk in the messy water. Was fun and so cold. Lena wasn't in Raglan, so I hang out with these guys at first...

What to do in Ragland at the weekend:
1. Hotel: Double Gin Tonic ($7)
2.1. Yot Club: Saturday night!!
2.2. Yot Club: Sunday Session!!
3. Shack: Hangover Brunch + Bloody Mary!

I was hanging around with those guys until Lena came back. I was sleeping on the camping ground and in some cars somewhere.
View of Waikato Region

Fern Forest
Mount Maunganui/Tauranga:
Then Sam, Marie and me started a road trip to Mount Maunganui which is located 2h away at the east coast. Lena came a few days later but Sam was with us. We were very disappointed when we arrived there. We wanted to go back to Raglan! There were so many houses, lots of traffic and a big  industrial harbor. And the mount. We first checked out the beach and that was nice. But no waves. It's worth to do the walk around the mount and to '!!!climb!!!' up to the summit. I don't like hiking and I nearly died during the walk but the view was epic. I grew up in the mountains but really don't like hikes and heights. I still do some but I can't enjoy it. I am more a water person.

Beachwalk
Anyway, the cheapest holiday park was fully booked (and no we don't pay more than $10 for any accommodation) and we had no place to stay, so we stayed at the memorial park in Tauranga City. Please note: It is not an offical camping area. It's just a normal park.

Flora, Marie and Sam
Mount Maunganui Beach and Town
Rotorua:
Rotorua is located more inland and south of Tauranga. The nature is amazing and there are some breathtaking sceneries such as the Okere Waterfall and some hot springs . It's worth to stay there for one or two nights. I love the redwoods. It's a forest with incredible high trees and crazy crystal clear water.

The Water in the Red Wood

Okere Falls
Waihau Bay:
After having some phone calls and checked out at backpackerboard.nz for some available jobs, we had a job confirmed. Orchard work on a kiwi farm. We were so excited! Before we arrived at Waihau Bay (which is located close to the East Cape), we stayed in Opotiki for a night. We had a coffee in a cozy Cafe called 'two fish cafe' and checked out the library for some wifi. Yes again.  Mobile network is horrible in NZ! Unfortunately the cafe gave us some blueberry muffins after they have closed during the arvo. We were so happy that we got those presents! Super nice people! We come back there again!
Last but not least: after arriving at Waihau Bay, some fisherman gave us a fresh caught snapper and an other big fish (forgot the name). He saw us and asked randomly: 'hey girls, do you want to have some fish?' WTF???? Yes of course we do! He asked if we know how to filled and cook it. Yes I do. A little bit. I filled my first fish by myself for the first time!!! I have done it before but only with someone who showed it to me.

The Snapper and his big friend
Fish in the Pan

What a wicked day! Free homemade blueberry muffins and fresh caught fish! Kiwis are nice! But please be aware: no reception at all after Opotiki along the whole east coast! Which was ok for me and also nice just not to be available.
Kiwi Orchard in Waihau Bay
What surprised me in NZ:
There are many many Chinese people in Auckland! And I haven't thought that the Maori culture is big in NZ. I have heard from the culture before but never knew they are here in NZ as well (originally from Polynesia). Also there are some Indians living along the east coast and doing orchard work.
That's interesting to see that there are a few big ethnic groups living here.

Tomorrow we start working and I see you guys more in the next blog post.

Cheers Flora

True Blue Sailing - Atlantic Clipper

Atlantic Clipper (2D/2N)

As soon as you get dropped off at the marina, you will already recognise the Atlantic Clipper. It has these two huge masts and some of the crew are already ready to welcome you. If you are looking for socialising and meeting people, then you are on the perfect boat. I have to say the crew is awesome and very entertaining and I had a really good time. If you get seasick very easily, don't worry, this is the biggest vessel you can get on for visiting the Whithsundays'. The bigger the vessel, the less seasick you get. Enough reason to go on the popular Clipper!

This is the trip movie:

For who:
I recommend this board for single travelers, couples and friends between 18-30 years old. Especially for those who wants to enjoy a proper sailing trip with lots of entertainment and (that's why it's also well known as the party boat) for those who also just want to have a chill with a good vibe.

Gypsy Travel Lounge
Gypsy Travel:
For bookings please contact Rich 0435 903 996 or rich@gypsytravel.com.au

On board:
The top deck provides a sunny chill out area and bean bags to hang out in the shade. There is an awesome relaxed spa and two water slides that invites everyone to have lots of fun. Great snacks and meals are prepared during the whole trip on the second deck. Under the salon, the air conditioned cabins allow 53 passengers to stay on the vessel. I could sleep very well in the cabin.

The Crew:
The highlight of the trip is the crew! Thanks Clay for all the laughs and Ben for the awesome dives. Every crew member has its own character and they guarantee you a memorable time with their famous costume dancing show and the early noisy lovely wake-ups.

Activities:
After you have visited the Whitehaven Beach, with its pure white soft sand and crystal clear water, there are still many more things to do on the Clipper. Snorkeling with turtles and lots of fish, scuba diving ($) with a professional dive Instructor, sunbathing on the deck, relaxing in the spa, jumping from the deck into the tropical water and using the water slides for more action. Evening entertainment is guaranteed.

Clipper Jumping
Whitehaven Beach
Diving
What to bring:
  • your own munchies
  • BYO alcohol (beer cans, goon bags - no glass)
  • sunscreen 50++++
  • all kind of swimwear
  • towel
  • cash/card
  • jumper (there is a little breeze in the evening)
  • sunnies
  • and a bag (without a zip)
Sunset on the Clipper with the Crew
After the Trip:
I is still not over! After arriving back in Airlie Beach. With the people and new friends you spent the last days on the Clipper, you can enjoy dinner and free drinks at the Down Under bar. Some of the crew might join if they are not already on the next trip. Good vibe and life music. After having a few drinks, you can continue your night at Boom. Maybe you can still remember how you get back into you hostel, or you make a stopover at Maccas'.

My conclusion:
I had a very awesome time in Airlie Beach and on the Clipper. The Whitehaven Beach was incredible! Thanks Gypsy Travel and True Blue Sailing for having me there! I definitely recommend this trip to everyone I am going to meet in the Hostel, on the road, supermarket and just everywhere.

50 shades of Clay
Thanks to
Rich and Gypsy Travel, Debbie, True Blue Sailing, the Atlantic Clipper Crew,
Ben for the dives, and all 50 shades of Clay

The Agnes Water Effect

Where is Agnes Water?

If I mention this place to my friends and to travelers, where I spend most of my time in Australia, they have no idea where is it. Which is good. That means it's still not run over from tourists and it's kind of a secret spot to visit. I heard from some locals, that this place is compared to Byron bay 20-30 years ago. There is a small surf community here, a few shops and 4 hostels.

The main reason to come here is because of 1770. Its the only place in the world with numbers. This is the place, where Captain James Cook was landed here in 1770. He meant to be the first European who discovered Australia. There where some Dutch sailors here before, but they never discovered the land.

It is also a very popular fishing region, where all the guys go out and catch heaps of tuna, Spanish mackerel and with big luck also some crabs.

Same as for the surf. It is the most northern place where you can surf in Australia.

My story:

First I came here for 2 weeks in February 2016 to work at Backpackers@1770 for accommodation. Then I extended because I found a job in a small restaurant around the corner. I extended again, but then monthly. I had an awesome job at Café Discovery as a Barista. In addition I started working as a photographer for taking pictures at the "Reef to Beach Surfschool". I extended again and again (this is why it's called the Agnes Water EFFECT!!!!) and ended up managing the place now. Having a degree as a Travel Agent, it was easy for me to get along in this position.

Manager generation (Kristina, Lewie, Oscar, Flora and Duke)

So what else I am doing here? 9 month in Agnes water:

SURFING, working, SURFING, skating, SURFING, tie-dye, SURFING, fishing, SURFING, 4WD, SURFING, sunset, SURFING, SURFING, ... SURFING, SURFING, ...SURFING, SURFING, ...

There are Backpackers, they very appreciate this place and got hooked into the Agnes Water effect. For others it's boring, because they don't have the vibe and needed to hurry up to Airlie Beach or down to Hervey bay for some more party. There is actually a lot to do here although it is a small place. Please scroll down and see the guide.

About Backpackers@1770:

'The Backpackers is a family owned business, which was bought in August 2015. There are three owners, Oscar and his parents Paul and Sharon. They are originally from the Gold Coast, Paul and Sharon still live there and Oscar lives in Agnes. He runs the hostel alongside with his side-kick pet dog, Duke!

(Backpackers@1770)

Oscar and his family have each had an extensive experience in travelling and still hold this passion. Since owning the hostel they have recreated the space and are still developing areas to complete their vision. Their vision is to have a hostel that has a chilled vibe, with artwork, eco-projects and the look of a bohemian travelling hostel. With their experience in travelling and passion for the environment, they have applied this in how they've created the hostel; they want to make it to feel like home for backpackers and give them a memorable travelling experience. We also do promote Sea Shepherd. We have stickers, necklaces, bracelets and patches available. For more information's about Sea Shepherd please scroll down.

The main types of jobs provided here are for two hours a day to work for your accommodation. The requirement for work to stay period is 2 weeks minimum.

There are also opportunities to help Oscar in landscaping, eco-projects and art-work.
It is also included the free use of laundry facilities, surfboard and bike hire, free surf lessons, sunset tours plus discounts on tours in Agnes! ("...")'

Hitch Hiking in Australia, Airlie Beach

Hitch Hiking,

this is one sort of way of traveling. It depends on the countries how safe it is but it was pretty easy in Australia (please note: it is forbidden in some places).

There are a few places I know where it's easy and safe, e.g. Europe (France, Holland, Germany, Spain, Portugal!!). It's very common in Morocco as well.

I hitch hiked a few times from the farm in NSW where I worked back to the place I stayed. Only short distances.

It was a distance of 700km to go, from Agnes Water to Airlie Beach. I know lots of friends doing it, I know people who said it's dangerous but they never have done it before. I was curious and never have done it before either and that's why I did it. Lara from Holland was with me and we had a good time together. It took us 12-14h to get there. We had 4 cars and 2 Trucks. It was freakin awesome! Only Aussies picked us up and it was safe. Never had to worried about anything. It's your own choice if you want to hop in or not. There were great stories and I would do it again!

(Hitch hiking in QLD)

(going NORTH)

I stayed 5 days in Airlie Becah and it's an awesome place. I met a few friends and visited the Withsunday Islands with Lion, our Kayak Guide who we met in Agnes Water before. If you're interested in Kayaking in Airlie Beach, go and see 'Salty Dog Sea Kayaking'. Lion is an awesome guide.http://www.saltydog.com.au/

Update after 6 Month in Australia.. What I've done since December 2015

Hello Fellas,

Yes I am still alive..
I know, I haven't post anything since February. I can say I was very busy but the main reason was, I haven't continued travelling the past 3 month. I am still in Agnes Water

Now a small summary of what I've done in Australia:

I have been to VIC, SA, NSW and now I am in QLD. I've seen a lot and met awesome people.

After staying in Sydney and Melbourne for a long time, I travelled the Great Ocean Road (see blog) and all the way to Adelaide (December 2015). It was freakin' hot and dry there. On the way back, we have done the Grampians Nationalpark. It's a beautiful place there with a breathtaking view of the NP.

Grampians Nationalpark

After looking for farm work and failed on a tomato farm in the middle of nowhere in VIC,
I found SpotX, which is located in Woolgoolga, NSW.

The Blueberry Farmer Crew

One of the highlights! I stayed at SpotX (January 2016) for a month, trying to do some farm work on a blueberry farm. It's located in NSW between Coffs Harbour and Byron Bay. But I surfed most of the time. At that time I had a Mini Mal 6'8, Speedster from Aloha. Was fun though. Could practice a lot.

Lunch time at the Blueberry Farm

On my way to Coolangatta

Then the farm shut down. Season was done.
Then I continued traveling to a place called Beenleigh. It's located between Brisbane and Goldcoast. I stayed at a wonderful family and looked after the 2 boys Brook and Cooper. At the weekend, Tuz and me travelled to Nimbin, Byron and Coolangatta. I missed surfing a lot and we had a rad time together. Thanks Tuzcanee for the beautiful time

After staying 1 month in Beenleigh, I continued travelling and arrived in Agnes Water on the 28th February 2016. Now I am still here.

I am living at Backpackers@1770 and working as a driver for accommodation. I had additional jobs and worked in the kitchen, as a gardener, was employed as a barista and worked as a photographer for a surf school now ("Reef to Beach Yeeew"). Agnes water is a small town. You can see it as a surfer town and only a small village at the sea. It's a nice mix of locals and backpackers. Backpackers usually stay a few days before continuing to Airlie Beach (Whitsundays) or Hervey Bay (Frazer Island). There are some long term backpacker e.g. me or people from other hostels. I love it here!

Our Hostel is such a nice place to stay and to live. No wonder I am already staying here for 3 month and was planned to stay here just a couple of weeks.

Anything else what to do here in Agnes Water and why to come here, you'll see on the next blog.

See ya in the future! ("Dolphin")

A few easy recipes for travelling

As a Traveller/Backpacker, we always depend on saving money during traveling. Buying healthy and proper food can be very expensive. It's easy to get unhealthy cheap food (here in Australia) such as

  2. Peanutbutter
  3. Toast
  4. Pasta
  5. Macca's
  6. Subway Cookie
  7. Tim Tam's
  8. Nutella
  9. Bacon
  10. Instant noodles

It can be very easy: veggies, fruits from the market and a few ingredients from the supermarket can already made your day. Here a few easy recipes:
